Braves News: Tate Southisene to the IL, top prospects list, more

· · 2 min read

AJ Smith-Shawver has returned to Atlanta’s rotation. While it was only a middling 4.1 inning start, the talent he shows and the dire situation of the rotation should cause him to get a decent leash in the major league rotation as he continues to return from injury. This is of course pending reinforcements that could easily be added by his next turn of the rotation, with the trade deadline looming. That said, outside of Chris Sale, it’s an island of misfit toys in the rotation and I say that with no disrespect to Bryce Elder, who is clearly a serviceable innings-eater, Martin Perez, who is a veteran providing stability, Grant Holmes, who has spent two years admirably performing fifth starter quality pitching out of the rotation when he is clearly a reliever, and Reynaldo Lopez who is…who really knows at this point. For now AJ will return to AAA after serving as the doubleheader’s 27th man, but there is simply enough talent and present quality for him to be up in the majors and not enough there to keep him down, even with trade additions.
