Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight: Herald Officially Releases November 2027

· · 3 min read

Fans have been waiting patiently for the return of Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive, but the wait for the next chapter of Roshar’s story is finally starting to inch its way closer. Following the release of Wind and Truth in 2024, Sanderson stepped away from the series to focus on other Cosmere projects, leaving readers wondering when the promised “Back Five” would finally begin to take shape.

Fortunately, his latest update offered some encouraging news. Sanderson has already begun the early outlining process for the second half of the saga, with plans to spend 2027 mapping out Books 6 through 10 before beginning to write the sixth installment in January 2028. The next novel is still years away, but at least the road back to Roshar is on the map.

In the meantime, The Stormlight Archive has been quite busy elsewhere. The extraordinary success of Stormlight: War for Roshar has shown just how enthusiastic the fanbase remains, and the official confirmation of Stormlight: Herald offers yet another exciting development for fans eager to see the franchise expand.

Brotherwise Games has officially confirmed Herald as part of its enormously successful Stormlight: War for Roshar Kickstarter campaign, which concluded on November 5, with more than $3.6 million pledged by nearly 15,000 backers. While Herald isn’t a separate game, it’s the campaign’s highest pledge tier, offering an enormous collection of Stormlight Archive and Cosmere tabletop releases for fans who supported the project at the $375 level.

The Herald pledge includes everything offered in the $295 Fifth Ideal tier, beginning with the upcoming War for Roshar strategy board game and its Champions Expansion. Backers will also receive a collection of deluxe upgrades, including enhanced 3D components, custom card sleeves, premium wooden army tokens, and the applicable stretch-goal rewards unlocked during the campaign.

Beyond the main game, Herald includes four additional Cosmere miniature releases:

  • Wind and Truth Miniatures Set
  • Stormlight 2026 Miniatures Set
  • Mistborn Miniatures Set
  • Gargantuan Thunderclast Miniature

These miniature collections expand the range of characters and creatures available to fans, with figures suitable for display or use in the larger Cosmere Roleplaying Game. The Kickstarter also offered other optional add-ons, including the earlier Stormlight 2024 miniature collection, the Gargantuan Chasmfiend, and miniature bundles inspired by the previous Stormlight Archive novels.

Perhaps the biggest incentive for choosing Herald, though, was the inclusion of three additional Cosmere tabletop releases beyond War for Roshar itself. Backers who selected the tier will also receive Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, the Well of Ascension expansion, and Shards of Creation.

All of these goodies made Herald a very appealing package for longtime Sanderson fans, bringing together multiple games inspired by his interconnected fantasy universe. While Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game is a card-driven experience inspired by Scadrial’s magical abilities, Shards of Creation explores the broader Cosmere through a separate competitive card game.

As for War for Roshar itself, the upcoming strategy game will allow players to command forces representing Honor and Odium, recruiting iconic characters, developing armies, and using Surgebinding abilities as they compete for control of Roshar.

Brotherwise Games currently expects War for Roshar to begin fulfilling Kickstarter orders in November 2027, with a broader retail release planned around the 2027 holiday season. All items included in the Herald pledge are expected to ship together, including the previously released Cosmere games, meaning backers should anticipate receiving their complete bundles toward the end of next year.
