Brandon Cisse makes a good first impression

Nobody really wants to hear about bright spots after the way the Packers started the season, but there were a few in Week 1, and rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse was one of them.

Yes, Justin Jefferson got the better of him on one noteworthy play, but Justin Jefferson has a way of doing that. He’s victimized better corners than Cisse well past the first game of their career. But outside of Jefferson’s score, Cisse was on target and on task, playing 49 snaps in his first game in the NFL, the most of any Packers defender that didn’t hit 100% in Week 1.

The Packers’ defensive backfield has been the target of no small number of questions this offseason, but if this is what we can expect from Cisse, those questions should largely go away. He and Keisean Nixon will have their problems, I’m sure, but every competent snap helps every other defensive back do his job better.

That’s the real takeaway from Cisse’s performance. Rising tides in the secondary tend to carry all boats, and every decent performer takes just that much pressure off of everyone else. If Cisse continues to grow and perform well, it’ll only help a Packers team that can use all the help it can get right now.
