The Portland Trail Blazers will open the 2026-27 season without one of their top young scorers.
Guard Shaedon Sharpe sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee during a recent offseason workout and is expected to miss approximately six months, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday.
The timeline puts a significant portion of Sharpe’s upcoming season in jeopardy and represents another frustrating injury setback for the 23-year-old as Portland prepares to take another step forward.
Sharpe averaged 20.8 points per game last season, establishing himself as one of Portland’s primary offensive weapons. However, his breakout campaign was interrupted when a stress fracture in his left fibula forced him to miss a substantial stretch.
Now, Sharpe faces another lengthy rehabilitation process, this time involving his right knee.
Blazers’ $90 mllion star suffers Injury
The timing is particularly difficult because Sharpe is entering the first season of the four-year, $90 million extension he signed with Portland last year. He is scheduled to earn approximately $20 million during the 2026-27 season.
Portland, however, is better positioned than most teams to absorb the loss in its backcourt.
The Trail Blazers are set to enter the season with veterans Ja Morant, Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday on the roster. Their presence gives Portland considerable experience and flexibility while Sharpe recovers.
Lillard provides shooting and playmaking, Morant brings explosive scoring and pressure at the rim, and Holiday gives Portland a proven two-way option capable of defending multiple positions.
Still, replacing Sharpe’s athleticism and scoring production will not be simple.
The former No. 7 overall pick has developed into an important part of Portland’s long-term plans, with his ability to attack the basket and create his own shot making him a potentially dangerous complement to the team’s veteran guards.
If Sharpe’s six-month recovery timetable holds, his absence could extend well into the regular season.
For Portland, the immediate focus will be navigating the opening months without him.
For Sharpe, the challenge becomes another rehabilitation — and another attempt to return healthy enough to resume his rise as one of the Trail Blazers’ most important young pieces.
