Bills make decision on C.J. Gardner-Johnson after spitting incident

· · 2 min read

C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s decision to spit on Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers will cost him a game on the field and some money in his pocket, but not his roster spot with the Buffalo Bills.

Gardner-Johnson, who was issued a one-game suspension by the NFL for his transgression, will not be cut, Bills head coach Joe Brady confirmed on Monday.

“Look, C.J.’s a member of the Buffalo Bills,” Brady told reporters when asked about the veteran safety’s status. “We brought him here for a reason, and we know that he knows that he has to play better. He knows he has to be better for this team, and, you know, just like everybody else, right, we’ve got to learn from this stuff, and we have to improve and find ways to get better as the season goes.”

CJGJ apologizes

Gardner-Johnson spit on Bowers during a confrontation in the second half of Buffalo’s 33-30 win at Allegiant Stadium Sunday. In a statement released Monday, he apologized for his actions.

“I want to take a moment to address my actions and sincerely apologize to my opponent, my teammates, my organization, and everyone who supports me,” Gardner-Johnson wrote. “My passion and competitive nature have always been a huge part of who I am, but I also understand that there is a line that should never be crossed. The gesture I made toward my opponent was inappropriate, unnecessary, and not a reflection of the respect I have for him or this game.

“There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability. No matter how emotional or intense the competition gets, I have to hold myself to a higher standard.”

The Bills have a bye this weekend, meaning Gardner-Johnson will have to sit out the team’s Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 1.
