Bills coordinator faces one of NFL's toughest jobs in 2026, ESPN says
Sean McDermott spent nearly a decade building the Buffalo Bills defense.
Jim Leonhard has one training camp to reshape it.
ESPN believes that gives the Bills’ new defensive coordinator one of the toughest jobs in the NFL entering the 2026 season.
In a list of the league’s biggest new NFL coordinator questions, ESPN ranked Leonhard’s defensive overhaul at the top. It pointed to Buffalo’s transition away from McDermott’s longtime scheme while trying to meet Super Bowl expectations.
“The message is painfully clear — anything less than a Super Bowl appearance will be deemed a failure,” ESPN wrote.
Leonhard inherits one of the NFL’s most successful teams, but also one of its biggest schematic changes.
After nine years under McDermott, the Bills are asking returning players to learn new terminology, techniques and responsibilities while incorporating veteran additions and rookies into the system.
Buffalo also made personnel moves this offseason, signing Bradley Chubb, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Geno stone, and Mike Danna while drafting T.J. Parker, Davison Igbinosun, Kaleb Elarms-Orr and Jalon Kilgore, Zane Durant and Toriano Pride.
The expectation isn’t simply to improve the defense. It’s to do it immediately.
“We’re going to be an attacking defense up front and in the back end,” Leonhard said during the offseason. “We’re going to attack the football. The biggest stat in football is turnovers.”
He has repeatedly emphasized forcing offenses to react rather than allowing quarterbacks to dictate games, while stressing that the Bills will tailor the scheme to the strengths of their personnel rather than forcing players into predetermined roles.
Most coordinators taking over a new defense have time to build. Leonhard doesn’t.
ESPN argued that balancing a major defensive transition with those expectations makes Buffalo’s defensive coordinator one of the league’s most fascinating storylines entering training camp.
