Bertha Russell’s Latest The Gilded Age Secret Can Destroy 2 Families

· · 4 min read

Just one episode into The Gilded Age season 4, and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) already has a huge secret. At the end of The Gilded Age season 3, Bertha was the toast of New York high society, having hosted a Newport Ball for the ages and triumphed over her greatest rival, Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy). However, Bertha’s social climbing came at a great cost, as her husband, George (Morgan Spector), announced he was leaving her, unable to forgive Bertha for wedding their daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), off to Hector, Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb) without her consent.

In The Gilded Age season 4 premiere, Bertha and George’s marriage woes take a backseat to the impending arrival of their first grandchild. Gladys, who announced her pregnancy in season 3, is in labor, and Bertha has traveled to England to be with her daughter for the birth. Alas, the baby is in a breech position, and Gladys’s doctor tells Hector that he may have to choose between saving the Duchess or the child. The Duke’s sister, Lady Sarah Vere (Hattie Morahan), lobbies for the unborn heir while Bertha implores Hector to choose Gladys.

Hector sides with Bertha, though fortunately, the decision never has to be made, and Gladys delivers a healthy baby boy, the Marquess of Sidmouth. However, she’s not out of the woods after the birth, as she suffers a severe hemorrhage, forcing the doctor to perform an emergency, life-saving hysterectomy.

This means that Gladys will never be able to conceive another child, and right now, only Bertha and Hector know the truth. Bertha begs the Duke not to tell his wife yet and to allow her to bask in the joys of new motherhood, but the secret could have devastating consequences for two of The Gilded Age‘s most prominent families.

What Bertha & The Duke’s Secret From Gladys Means For The Russells & The Buckinghams

Producing a male heir is a big win for the Buckingham family line, but in the eyes of the British aristocracy, Gladys’s job as Duchess is far from over. Society also expects her to produce at least one “spare” to ensure the line of succession. Failure to do so could cause immense scandal for the Duke and Duchess of Buckingham and threaten their reputation.

While Hector is keeping the secret out of love for Gladys, Bertha’s motives aren’t entirely pure. She certainly wants to save her daughter some pain, but Bertha also needs time to strategize and devise a failsafe plan to protect the Russells against any fallout. However, Bertha has only recently won her way back into Gladys’s good graces, and if Gladys learns that her mother hid such a massive secret from her, she’ll see it as another huge betrayal.

With a guilt-ridden Hector already looking like he’ll crack at any moment, it seems like only a matter of time before he tells Gladys the truth. And if he does, Gladys may not be the only Russell who will never forgive Bertha.

Bertha’s Secret Is One More Reason That Can End Her Marriage With George

Bertha and George’s marriage is already on shaky ground, with him having moved out of their family home and staying at the Union Club. The entire reason for their separation is that George can no longer abide Bertha’s scheming. George had promised Gladys he would let her marry for love, but he was forced to break that promise when Bertha offered their daughter to the Duke.

Despite George’s own ruthlessness in business, he draws the line at family. He already thinks Bertha is more of a chessmaster than a mother, and should he discover her latest secret, he’ll conclude that Bertha is keeping it solely for tactical reasons, which to George will likely be emblematic of why he left her in the first place.

What’s more, George has so little trust in Bertha left that he likely won’t believe she had no knowledge of, or say in, Gladys’s hysterectomy until it was already performed. Wedding bells may have rung in the premiere, but The Gilded Age season 4 could well end with a divorce.
