Benue: Police arrest man over alleged defilement of 10-year-old girl

The Benue State Police Command has apprehended a 60-year-old man suspected of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl in Igumale district of Ado Local Government Area, LGA.

According to the police, the incident was reported on October 13, 2026, after which the victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and appropriate treatment.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed the arrest during a press briefing in Makurdi, stating that investigations into the case were ongoing.

He assured that the suspect would face the full consequences of the law if found culpable, adding that the command would ensure the protection of the victim’s privacy and welfare throughout the investigation.

Nwadiogbu identified the arrest as one of the major achievements recorded by the command during its security operations in October.

He further revealed that the police apprehended 14 suspects, recovered seven locally made firearms and 16 rounds of ammunition and cartridges, while one suspected bandit was neutralised during the period.

The police commissioner attributed the operational successes to intelligence-driven policing, swift responses to emergency calls, regular patrols and effective cooperation with other security agencies and community stakeholders.

He called on residents to promptly report incidents of violence, abuse and other criminal offences to the police, stressing that timely information would help security operatives respond quickly and prevent further crimes.
