Benue govt warns residents against building on waterways, vows to end flooding

The Benue State Government has reiterated its determination to tackle persistent flooding affecting communities across the state, warning residents against erecting structures on waterways and other areas prone to flooding.

The government said buildings constructed in low-lying areas or on natural water channels contribute significantly to flash floods, obstruction of water flow and the eventual inundation of homes and other properties.

While acknowledging residents’ right to develop their properties, the administration stressed that developers must obtain the necessary approvals and ensure that proper architectural plans are prepared before commencing construction.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Benue State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Solomon Iorpev, the government also raised concerns over the practice of dumping refuse into drainage channels.

According to the statement, blocked drainage systems, coupled with buildings erected along waterways, are among the major factors responsible for the repeated flooding recorded in some parts of the state.

The government said its ongoing investment in drainage infrastructure demonstrated the commitment of the Alia administration to finding lasting solutions to the problem.

It disclosed that additional measures were being implemented through the Benue State Agro-Climatic Watershed Management Agency, including the construction of a two-metre-wide drainage channel around Achusah.

The new drainage system is expected to link existing drainage channels to the river, thereby improving water flow and preventing the recurrence of flooding in affected communities.

The government appealed to residents to adhere strictly to approved procedures when developing properties and avoid activities capable of blocking or interfering with drainage systems.

It assured residents that efforts would continue to establish sustainable and long-term measures aimed at ending recurring flooding in Benue State.
