Bengals’ Josh Newton isn’t out of the race just yet

Don’t count out Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Josh Newton.

Back in early August, the vibes were that Newton was in a sort of “doghouse” with coaches, based on his early usage, showings and context from a year ago.

But things change quickly in the NFL.

Fast forward to now, Newton’s getting some reps with the ones and twos during training camp and is used all over the formations, inside and out.

Newton sure doesn’t mind. He kept it short and sweet when asked by Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com if he prefers outside or inside: “Wherever they put me.”

Fair enough.

Hobson reported that Newton revamped his training this offseason, especially when it comes to conditioning. That’s not unusual for a third-year player to keep refining his training as he better adapts to the pros.

The result might just be not only a final roster spot, but a role in the rotation. The Bengals have DJ Turner and Dax Hill as starters on the boundary and Jalen Davis on the inside, with DJ Ivey and draft pick Tacario Davis there as key depth.

There’s certainly room for Newton, especially if he’s running like this and grabbing interceptions like he did on Tuesday when he picked off Joe Flacco.
