Ben Sinnott explains why he can succeed in Commanders' new offense

The Washington Commanders had a down year in 2025.

Everyone was disappointed with last season’s results, but there’s plenty of optimism that things will be better in 2026. Of course, health was a major reason for the team’s struggles, and simply having important players available should make a difference.

However, another factor that will help the Commanders return to contention is for some unproven players to take that next step. One of the players the Commanders need to see more from is tight end Ben Sinnott.

Sinnott was added in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and the hope was that he could take over the room after Zach Ertz. Instead, Sinnott has only earned five starts in two seasons, and he’s failed to make much of an impact.

That could change in 2026, though, and Sinnott recently explained why he thinks he can be better in 2026. Sinnott believes new offensive coordinator David Blough’s outside zone scheme plays to his strengths and will allow him to reach his potential.

“This offense is based on outside zone play-action,” Sinnott explained. “That’s something I feel I’m very good at. Running off the ball, moving around, lining up in different spots to use my skillset, and I think it just really suits the way that I play.”

There’s definitely a space for Sinnott on this offense, so that’s good to hear. Chig Okonkwo was brought in as the receiving threat at tight end, while John Bates is one of the best blockers at the position. On passing downs, it would be nice if the Commanders could have Sinnott on the field as well, especially considering the questionable wide receiver depth.

With a big training camp and preseason, Sinnott could definitely work his way into the team’s plans. That third year is usually a make-or-break year for offensive players, so hopefully Sinnott is correct, and this offensive change makes all the difference.
