Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou enters three-way race for 2030 World Cup final

· · 2 min read

Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou has emerged as a potential contender to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, according to SPORT, adding a third major venue to a race that had largely been viewed as a contest between Madrid and Casablanca.

The renovated Camp Nou is expected to hold around 105,000 spectators by 2030, giving Barcelona a major argument as FIFA considers where to stage the tournament’s showpiece match.

Notably, Madrid has the experience and Santiago Bernabeu, while Morocco is pushing Casablanca and its planned Hassan II Grand Stadium.

Camp Nou gives Barcelona a major capacity advantage

Barcelona’s case is built around a stadium that should be fully transformed by the time the World Cup arrives.

Current projections put the completion of the Camp Nou redevelopment in the first quarter of 2028, leaving more than two years for the venue to operate and test its facilities before the tournament.

Its expected capacity of close to 105,000 would make it Spain’s largest stadium by 2030 and comfortably put it above Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu.

The stadium will also have already hosted one of European football’s biggest occasions, as UEFA confirmed Camp Nou as the venue for the 2029 Champions League final, giving Barcelona an important opportunity to show their organisational capabilities before the World Cup.

Barcelona faces Madrid and ambitious Casablanca bid

The competition is not limited to Spain, as Morocco has significantly increased its efforts to bring the final to Casablanca, where the Hassan II Grand Stadium is planned to accommodate 115,000 spectators.

Fortunately, the decision will not only revolve around stadium size, as organisational experience, investment and institutional backing are expected to play a role, with Catalan sporting authorities already making the case for Barcelona’s ability to stage the final.

The RFEF’s earlier plans had pointed towards Madrid, but no venue has been officially confirmed by FIFA.

On that note, the decision could come in 2028, although FIFA itself has not officially committed to that date.

Camp Nou has a case but no guarantees

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly backed the idea, highlighting both Camp Nou’s capacity and the chance for the city to host a World Cup final for the first time.

“Casablanca and Madrid are the same,” he had said.

Barcelona therefore have a genuine proposal to put before FIFA, but the final decision remains open.

Camp Nou’s size and redevelopment give the city a strong foundation, yet the competition from Madrid and Casablanca means nothing can be taken for granted.
