Barcelona wonderkid set for two-month absence with growth-related fracture

· · 2 min read

Barcelona have been dealt a setback in the development of one of their most promising academy talents, with David Moreno expected to spend more than two months away from competitive action because of persistent back problems linked to a growth-related fracture.

According to SPORT, the young left-footed midfielder has been struggling with discomfort since last season.

Notably, rather than a conventional sporting injury, the issue is connected to his rapid physical development, prompting Barcelona to prioritise rest over an immediate return to the pitch.

Moreno had already missed several matches last season because of back pain, but the problem has continued into the current campaign.

Hence, the club now believes that a period away from competition is the best way to help him recover.

The plan is for the youngster to spend just over two months resting while continuing supervised gym work with Barcelona’s physiotherapists.

If his recovery progresses as expected, he could return to action with the club’s Under-15 team after that period.

The priority is to ensure the issue does not interfere with his long-term development.

Understandably, Barcelona are taking a cautious approach rather than rushing a player they believe has considerable potential.

Moreno’s rapid growth raises physical challenges

As per the outlet, Moreno has grown by 11 centimetres over the past year and now stands at 1.70 metres. He is expected to reach approximately 1.80 metres once his growth process is complete.

Such rapid development has coincided with the back discomfort that has affected his availability.

Furthermore, his absence from Spain’s latest Under-15 squad was also linked to these physical problems, despite having featured in some preseason matches for Barcelona.

For now, his training programme will focus on recovery and physical work under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.

Barcelona continue to invest in Moreno’s development

Moreno is in his fourth season at La Masia after Barcelona identified him while he was playing for Levante’s youth setup.

He has progressed through the Under-12, Under-13 and Under-14 categories and is now part of the Under-15 squad.

The left-footer is regarded as a player with significant potential, and Barcelona are keen to develop his technical ability alongside his physical and tactical growth.
