Barcelona midfielder’s El Clasico omission raises fresh questions over his role at club

· · 2 min read

Gavi endured a significant setback in his difficult Barcelona season after Hansi Flick left him on the bench throughout the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

As per SPORT, it marked the first time the midfielder has missed an entire El Clasico through a coach’s selection decision since making his first-team debut.

The 22-year-old had made no secret of his eagerness to face Barcelona’s fiercest rivals, but his competitive spirit counted for nothing when Flick decided against introducing him at the Spotify Camp Nou.

More concerning than the omission itself is what it says about Gavi’s position in a midfield where opportunities are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

For a player who has often thrived in the intensity of these fixtures, being unable to influence the contest was a particularly stark indication of how dramatically his circumstances have changed.

Flick’s midfield hierarchy is becoming clearer

Gavi had helped build anticipation for the Clasico with an emphatic assessment of what the fixture demands.

“In Clasicos, you have to go to war. It doesn’t matter how either team is doing; these are do-or-die matches,” he said on Saturday.

Yet the midfielder was unable to translate that enthusiasm into an appearance. Although his omission from the starting lineup was not unexpected, the decision to leave him unused throughout the match was far more significant.

Flick had already addressed Gavi’s situation in September, acknowledging the midfielder’s determination while emphasising the need to accept the team’s circumstances.

“Gavi has great ambition and always wants to play. He played, got injured and then returned to playing, but the team is functioning as it is, and that has to be accepted,” the Barcelona manager explained.

The challenge for Gavi is that the competition has become even tougher since those comments.

Frenkie de Jong returned against Real Madrid, while Pedri and Rodri appear firmly established among Flick’s preferred midfield options.

Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo provide further alternatives, and Marc Bernal has also featured in the competition for minutes.

With so many players competing for a limited number of positions, Gavi risks slipping towards the bottom of the midfield rotation.

A difficult situation

Gavi’s current predicament is particularly frustrating given the physical difficulties he has had to overcome.

The numbers underline the problem. Gavi has started only twice this season and has accumulated very limited playing time.

His absence from the Clasico was therefore not an isolated incident, but the clearest indication yet of his diminished status.

The La Masia graduate’s contract runs until 2030, and his commitment to Barcelona is not in question.

Nevertheless, the coming months could prove important in determining whether he can work his way back into Flick’s plans before the January transfer window.
