Barcelona leading the race to sign 18-year-old defensive gem – report

· · 2 min read

As already reported, FC Barcelona have begun reshaping the way they identify defensive talent, marking a significant shift in the club’s scouting philosophy.

While the club has traditionally focused much of its recruitment efforts on Catalonia and the Spanish market, the scouting department is now expanding its international reach in search of a different type of defender.

Modern football’s increasing physical demands, faster transitions and greater emphasis on athleticism have encouraged the club to prioritize defenders with more size, strength and physical presence.

This strategic adjustment has led Barcelona to intensify their scouting activities outside Spain, as witnessed by their signing of Juwensley Onstein in the winter window, and their recent interest in Lucas Herrington of Australia.

In that context, SPORT reports that Barcelona are currently leading the race for Herrington’s signature.

The 18-year-old defender, currently with Colorado Rapids, stands at 1.93 meters and has already earned senior international recognition with Australia despite being born in 2007.

Having begun his journey with Brisbane Roar in Australia, the teenager moved to the MLS club in the winter and has made a big impression, making 17 appearances in which he has one goal and an assist.

Herrington has also made four appearances for Australia, and is in the national team squad for the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

Known for his physical dominance and aerial ability, Herrington has become one of Barcelona’s primary defensive targets with an eye on the future.

Contract until 2029

As things stand, Herrington remains contracted with Colorado Rapids until 31 December 2029, with the MLS outfit retaining the option of extending it by another year.

But, Barcelona are understood to be making progress towards securing his signing despite interest from several clubs.

Should the signing be completed, it is expected that the 18-year-old prospect will become a part of the club’s reserve team, Barça Atletic, under Juliano Belletti.
