Barcelona have high hopes on South American teenager who is waiting to join amid administrative delays

Josue Caicedo’s eagerly anticipated arrival at FC Barcelona has been delayed by administrative procedures, leaving the 18-year-old still waiting in Ecuador for the clearance needed to travel to Spain, reports SPORT.

The promising left-back was officially announced as a Barça Atletic signing on July 13, but more than three weeks later he has yet to join Juliano Belletti’s squad.

Although the club had hoped he would report in time for pre-season training and participate in the reserve team’s camp, it has already begun without him.

Bureaucratic process delays arrival

This is not the first time Barcelona have encountered delays when signing a non-EU player for Barça Atletic, with the situation stemming from administrative procedures rather than any issue involving the club itself.

Nevertheless, it is an inconvenience for Belletti, who has already welcomed four of the reserve team’s new signings: Joni Hernandez, Juan Ybarra, Ignasi Quer, and Javi Castro.

Caicedo remains the only outfield arrival yet to join the group.

As per the report, Barcelona view Caicedo as a player with significant long-term potential.

The Ecuadorian arrives on loan from LDU Quito, with an option to buy worth €2.5 million, which could reportedly become mandatory if certain performance-related conditions are met.

The Blaugrana scouting department was particularly impressed by his athleticism, attacking instincts, pace, and ability to beat defenders on either the inside or outside.

His quality when delivering crosses also stood out, convincing Barcelona to move forward with the deal.

Despite being only 18, Caicedo has already gained senior experience. He made eight first-team appearances for LDU Quito, accumulating 344 minutes across all competitions.

One of the highlights of his early career came on May 26, when he made his Copa Libertadores debut against Bolivia’s Always Ready in a 3-2 victory.

Although naturally a left-back, his attacking style often sees him operate almost like a winger, while he has also featured as a midfielder, underlining his versatility.

For now, the teenager continues to wait in Ecuador for the administrative issues to resolve so that he can arrive at Barcelona.
