Bangladesh President, Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing deteriorating health that he said has left him unable to continue carrying out his constitutional responsibilities.

The 76-year-old confirmed his decision during a telephone interview following reports that he intended to step down before the expiration of his tenure in 2028.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin explained that both his physical and mental health had worsened, making it impossible for him to effectively discharge the duties of the presidency.

He stated that he was no longer in a position to fulfil the obligations attached to the country’s highest constitutional office.

Popularly known as “Chuppu,” Shahabuddin was elected president by Parliament in 2023 with the support of the Awami League, the party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

After the student-led uprising that forced Hasina from office in 2024, pressure mounted on Shahabuddin to resign because of his close association with her administration.

Earlier this year, he dismissed allegations that he had spoken with Hasina while undergoing medical treatment in London.

A day before the resignation was officially confirmed, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had said the government had not received any formal resignation letter from the president.

He noted that the constitution requires a president intending to resign to submit a written notice to the Speaker of Parliament.
