Ballon d’Or 2026: ‘With him anything is possible’ – Casemiro names favourite to win award

Former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has named his Inter Miami teammate, Lionel Messi, as his preferred candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award, saying that “anything is possible” when it comes to the Argentine’s capabilities.

Following Inter Miami’s 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup final, Casemiro was questioned about the prospect of Messi securing a ninth Ballon d’Or accolade.

The Brazilian midfielder responded, “Well, we are aware that with him, anything is possible, correct? He demonstrated this capability at the World Cup. It is not truly my place to say—though, naturally, when he performs alongside a teammate, he consistently desires that teammate’s success, and evidently, he aspires to triumph himself.

“However, that decision rests with the voting members. My sole wish for him is the utmost success, and I trust that individuals will also acknowledge his accomplishments at the World Cup, you understand? That holds considerable significance, but I believe those of us here with him greatly appreciate his presence.”

Messi received a nomination on September 8 as one of thirty candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Despite being 39, the Inter Miami forward has maintained his exceptional performance standards.

He led Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup championship in December and recorded 43 goals and 26 assists across 49 matches in all competitions.

Subsequently, he delivered an outstanding display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, guiding Argentina to the championship match, though they were defeated by Spain.

His latest accomplishment came on Wednesday evening, when Messi scored with a header and provided an assist to Casemiro, securing Inter Miami’s inaugural Campeones Cup championship.
