Babydoll singer says life will 'never be the same again' after UK number one
Jamie Miller is the first Welshman to top the singles chart in 15 years
Jamie Miller says “nothing feels normal” anymore but he is trying to “live in the moment” as he comes to terms with his history-making song Babydoll.
Last week the 29-year-old became the first Welsh artist to top the UK singles chart in 15 years with the viral TikTok hit.
The singer, who is originally from Pontprennau in Cardiff, said his dreams had “come true” and life would “never be the same again” after a challenging few years in which he even had to give up on music for a time.
Miller said the last year had been “insane” as he has gone from watching Gavin and Stacey with his parents to getting messages on his social media from the cast.
Miller made history when he became the first Welsh artist to top the singles chart since Sian Evans’ feature on DJ Fresh’s Louder.
He is also the first solo male Welsh artist in 41 years to top the singles chart, after Shakin’ Stevens’ 1985 timeless festive hit, Merry Christmas Everyone.
“It just doesn’t feel real. To actually live my dreams the way that it’s coming about right now,” he said.
The song found fame on TikTok when actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted videos featuring the track. But Miller said the “genuineness” of the track also made it stand out as his first song since his hiatus.
“I went through a really, really hard few years in my personal life, and I took two years off music,” he said.
“There’s a genuineness to how I sound in the song. The world’s in a little bit of a dark place right now so maybe that’s why it’s made people come together.”
The singer is now preparing to go on a world tour
Miller’s song has shot him to stardom but, of course, life carries on as normal for his loved ones.
He said his parents were “finding it a bit mad” with his dad going back to work as an Uber driver in Cardiff.
“None of us know what’s going on,” he said.
“I remember sitting on the couch with my mum and dad last Christmas and we were all watching Gavin and Stacey.
“Now Ruth Jones and James Corden are commenting on my posts.”
Jamie Miller and Antonio Cipriano performed Babydoll together on Strictly Come Dancing
Last weekend Miller and Off Campus star Antonio Cipriano brought Babydoll to Strictly Come Dancing which left the Welsh star feeling a “little emotional” as he reconnected with Emma Willis.
He describes the presenter as one of his “biggest champions” in the last decade. She previously hosted The Voice UK when Miller got to the final in 2017.
He added: “It felt fulfilling to go up to her and say that I made something of myself.
“I’ve watched Strictly Come Dancing growing up and that’s obviously been such a dream of mine to perform on the show.”
Miller said now he wanted to “marry the two worlds of dancing and singing” in his career.
Babydoll led to a viral dance that has become synonymous with the song, but Miller said he was relaxed about his future hits, saying “if it becomes a trend, it becomes a trend”.
Jamie Miller got to the final of The Voice UK when he was a teenager
After being depressed for a “long time”, Miller said he was now feeling “genuine joy”.
Addressing his fans, he added: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for changing my life and giving me my dreams.”
He is currently planning a world tour, and as a proud Welshman, he intends to put on some of the shows in Wales.
“It’s really exciting. I’m definitely coming back to Cardiff baby.”

Miller said he felt “weird” giving advice to his fans after his meteoric rise, but believes the key is to be “delusional with your dreams”.
“Don’t worry about the street you grew up on, the financial situation you got brought into,” he said.
“If you don’t believe in you, no one’s going to believe in you.”
Miller said he was a prime example of someone who had made the “impossible possible” as he never imagined it could happen to him.
“I was always scared that I would never be something of myself,” he said.
“Put your heart out there because one day it’s going to click.”
