Austin-area high school football Week 2 scores: Lake Travis kicks off its season vs Weiss

The second week of the 2026 Central Texas high school football season will start to answer some important questions around the Austin area Friday night:

• Is Lake Travis – the American-Statesman’s No. 1 team in the annual area preseason power poll – really the area’s top team? Tonight is the Cavs’ season opener after a tumultuous August that led to the cancellation of their season opener against Dripping Springs following the death of senior offensive lineman Odin Hensley. There’s a new quarterback this year for the Cavs, too: Jason Carter, the son of head coach Hank Carter.

• If Lake Travis isn’t the Austin area’s No. 1, that means the Cavs will fall in tonight’s opener at Weiss. The Wolves checked in at No. 4 in our preseason poll, are loaded with college prospects and blew past Round Rock 42-28 last week. Plus tonight’s game is at The Pfield in Pflugerville.

• Is Westlake, which opened last week with an impressive 33-26 win over visiting Inglewood, Calif., for real? The Chaps host fellow Class 6A state power Euless Trinity before facing an even bigger test next week: at Prosper.
