Augsburg’s Tim Schnitzer hopeful of becoming club’s next breakthrough player

FC Augsburg academy prospect Tim Schnitzer hopes to follow Noahkai Banks and Mert Kömür in establishing himself as a Bundesliga professional during the coming season. The 18-year-old made his senior debut shortly after his birthday last March, replacing Banks during the closing stages of Augsburg’s 2-1 defeat away at RB Leipzig. Schnitzer now hopes that handful of minutes will serve as the beginning of a considerably larger role under head coach Manuel Baum.

Baum recently identified Schnitzer alongside Banks and Kömür as one of Augsburg’s most promising homegrown players, stressing that the club can only provide young footballers with an appropriate developmental framework. Primarily a defensive midfielder, Schnitzer can also operate at centre-back or as a No. 8. Sporting director Benni Weber believes such versatility could help the academy graduate earn further opportunities.

“Tim is a very smart kid,” Weber told Kicker. “He can handle praise [of his abilities] and [still] keep it in perspective.”

Schnitzer joined Augsburg’s academy at the age of nine in 2017 and has remained with his hometown club throughout his development. His progression represents precisely the type of pathway FCA increasingly wish to continue funneling young players through. The Germany U18 international acknowledged in the very same Kicker piece that following Banks and Kömür served as “an honor”.

Schnitzer has completed his Fachabitur, allowing him to focus entirely on football for the coming year before potentially beginning a distance-learning degree related to sport or business. Competition for minutes nevertheless remains substantial. Augsburg have strengthened their squad with several young players capable of immediately challenging for starting roles.

One prominent example is Hennes Behrens, who joined from Hoffenheim following an encouraging Bundesliga loan spell with Heidenheim. The 21-year-old appears set to assume a major role on Baum’s left flank after Dimitrios Giannoulis’ departure.
