Attack On Titan Franchise Officially Returning For A Brand-New Finale

· · 3 min read

Attack on Titan has earned its place among the most iconic anime and manga franchises of all time, with Hajime Isayama’s dark fantasy captivating audiences through its shocking twists and complex characters, as well as its impressively ambitious storytelling. However, despite the series’ overwhelming popularity and critical acclaim, its conclusion remains one of the most divisive aspects of the entire franchise. The original manga ending garnered serious backlash when the final chapter was released back in 2021.

Much of the controversy surrounded Eren Yeager’s ultimate fate and the handling of several major character arcs, as well as the story’s overarching themes. When the anime finally concluded in November 2023, it managed to address some of these criticisms through much more successful dialogue and tweaks to the original ending, earning a warmer reception.

Even so, the finale continues to divide longtime fans, with many still questioning whether Isayama delivered the right conclusion to one of the most celebrated stories in modern anime. Now, in an upcoming release, the franchise is officially returning for a brand-new finale (via Crunchyroll).

Attack on Titan is officially returning on December 10, 2026, with an ambitious new adventure that will give fans another opportunity to experience the franchise’s controversial finale. Developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo, Attack on Titan 3 promises to adapt the entire story, including the events of the anime’s fourth and final season, while introducing a fresh perspective on its conclusion.

In a new interview with Crunchyroll, producer Hideo Suzuki revealed some important details about the upcoming game’s ending, including how it will differ from previous adaptations. While Attack on Titan 2 featured an original conclusion because the anime was still ongoing, the third installment will follow the established storyline rather than introduce an alternate ending.

Suzuki explained that because the original story is now complete, creating an entirely different conclusion wouldn’t make sense. However, the game will still feature a brand-new ending for its original, player-created protagonist, giving fans an opportunity to experience the final events of Attack on Titan from a completely different perspective.

This is particularly interesting considering the game’s approach to its main character, who will be a veteran member of the Scout Regiment as opposed to Eren Yeager himself. Players will create their own soldier, whose traumatic experiences and relationships with familiar characters provide an entirely new storyline running alongside the events of the anime.

Suzuki also confirmed that some of the most memorable scenes from the final season will be reworked to better fit the game’s style and pacing. These include Eren’s emotional interactions with Armin in the Paths and Mikasa’s cabin sequence. Additional original stories and character interactions will further expand the narrative beyond what audiences witnessed in the anime.

Although Attack on Titan 3 won’t exactly rewrite the franchise’s canonical ending, it could provide a different experience regarding its final divisive moments, particularly for longtime fans who were disappointed by the original conclusion. The game launches December 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, marking the first opportunity to experience the complete anime storyline through Koei Tecmo’s video game series.
