The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, branch, has suspended the strike action it embarked upon on May 19, 2026, following the intervention of Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at an emergency congress of the union held at the university’s Calabar campus, ending weeks of industrial action that disrupted academic activities.

The suspension followed a series of engagements involving the state government, the university management and ASUU leadership aimed at resolving the lingering dispute.

Last week, Governor Otu held a closed-door meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, members of the university management and ASUU leaders, including the Calabar Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Ikechukwu Igwenyi, and the branch chairperson, Dr. Patrick Ushie.

The governor had earlier met separately with student leaders and the university management as part of efforts to broker peace and restore normal academic activities.

According to the UNICROSS Media Team, the union’s decision to suspend the strike followed assurances given by the governor during the consultations.

The university said the development underscored the commitment of the Cross River State Government and the institution’s management to restoring industrial harmony through dialogue.

It also commended students, ASUU members and other stakeholders for their patience and constructive engagement throughout the industrial action.

The suspension clears the way for the immediate resumption of academic activities across the university, while details of the agreement reached between the parties are expected to be released later.
