ASUU calls off four-week strike at Benue varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, FUAM, branch, has called off its four-week “No Pay, No Work” industrial action.

The union announced the suspension in a statement signed by its chairperson, Terseer Abari, and made available to journalists on Sunday.

According to Abari, the decision followed progress made during the negotiations and the resolution of some of the issues that prompted the strike.

“Consequently, the Congress directed all members of the Branch to resume their official duties with effect from Friday, 11th September 2026,” the statement read in part.

The ASUU chairman praised members of the branch for their resilience, unity, patience and commitment throughout the period of the industrial action.

He said the outcome of the struggle had once again highlighted the importance of collective action and solidarity in advancing the legitimate interests and welfare of university workers.

Abari also acknowledged the role played by the university administration, expressing appreciation for its cooperation and efforts during the dispute.

He said the union was ready to maintain constructive discussions with the management on matters affecting staff welfare, members’ interests and the continued development of the institution.

While announcing the suspension, the union urged its members to resume work and approach their responsibilities with renewed dedication.

The branch also reaffirmed its commitment to the principles and traditions of ASUU, stressing that it would continue to protect the legitimate interests and welfare of its members through collective bargaining and constructive engagement.

Abari further thanked students, members of the public, stakeholders, organisations and other individuals who supported or showed understanding during the period of the strike.

The FUAM branch had commenced the industrial action on August 12, 2026, demanding full payment of its members’ Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
