Unai Emery has confirmed Matteo Ruggeri suffered a hamstring injury in Aston Villa’s 2-2 draw with Brentford.

The left-back was replaced at half-time by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who filled in on the left with Ian Maatsen already sidelined by an ankle injury.

“Ruggeri is hamstring,” Emery said.

George Hemmings also missed the Brentford game with a minor knee injury, although Emery said the teenager should not be out for long.

Emery was frustrated not to take all three points but felt there were signs of improvement from Villa’s previous home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

“To draw at home is not a good result,” he said.

“I think we played a match with a lot of things improved from our last home match against Forest.

“We created chances but conceded more chances than I expected.

“Maybe the result is fair but analysing how we are improving things, competing better I can’t tell nothing to the players about the match.

“We’ll try to analyse again how we can improve even more. A better match today than against Forest. Keep going forward.

“We tried, we pushed, we had chances but so did they. At the end we could’ve won, but also we could’ve lost.”
