Aston Villa 1-2 Nottingham Forest: What Emery said

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “For me it was really clear, it was a red card [foul on Ian Maatsen]. I watched it after the match. I watched it on TV and it was clear.

“We need passion and to try and keep in balance our expectations.

• Aston Villa ended a run of 372 Premier League minutes without a goal with their first of 2026-27, though it’s the fourth time they’ve started a Premier League season without winning any of their first four games, after 1992-93, 1997-98, and 2025-26.

• Only against Jurgen Klopp (P7 D3 L4) has Unai Emery faced a manager more often in his top-flight league career without winning than Oliver Glasner (P6 D2 L4), while the Spaniard is yet to beat him across all competitive encounters (P8 D2 L6).
