Assembly raises alarm as Diphtheria outbreak kills over 50 children in Kano
The Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently intervene in a diphtheria outbreak that has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 50 children in Rano Local Government Area.
The member representing Rano Constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Malami, raised the alarm in a motion of urgent public importance presented before the House on Tuesday.
Malami said more than 50 children had died from the outbreak in Rurum A, Rurum B and Sabuwar Kaura communities, all located in Rurum Ward of the local government area.
He disclosed that the medical department of the local government had commenced emergency intervention, with support from his office through the provision of medical drugs.
The lawmaker thanked members of the House for supporting the call for urgent government intervention to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of lives.
Meanwhile, the House approved and confirmed the nomination of Hon. Salihi Adamu as the new Secretary of Takai Local Government Area.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, announced the confirmation during Tuesday’s plenary following the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Local Government.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Aliyu Muhammad, said its recommendation was based on the nominee’s eligibility and capacity to perform the responsibilities of the office.
