“Arsenal are getting a very special player” – Newcastle chief speaks out on Bruno Guimaraes transfer

· · 2 min read

Newcastle United have confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes is joining Arsenal, with club chiefs Ross Wilson and David Hopkinson speaking out on the transfer.

The Brazil international has still not been officially announced by the Gunners, but it seems it’s now only a matter of time as Newcastle aren’t hiding the fact that their captain has left.

Guimaraes should be announced soon, according to Fabrizio Romano, and it seems Newcastle are happy with the deal they got, even if Wilson admits it wasn’t part of the club’s plan for this summer.

Meanwhile, Hopkinson paid tribute to Guimaraes by admitting Arsenal are getting a “special” player.

Newcastle confirm Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal sale

“What we had to weigh up was, very respectfully from Bruno with his behaviour towards us, very emotionally as well, he effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on,” Newcastle sporting director Wilson said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“That doesn’t mean he can go, but it certainly plays a part in what our thinking is when we hit a certain range of number.

“There’s no part in saying it was part of our strategy and was in our thinking this summer – it wasn’t.

“But we have got to be flexible and react to things that happen.”

Meanwhile, Hopkinson added: “It’s a fee that satisfies us. If you want to put a merchandising spin on it, it’s the highest fee for a player in that position at that age, and all those things come into play.

“Is it a good deal for Newcastle United? I believe it is, but Arsenal are getting a very special player and person. It’s worked from a financial perspective for both sides.”

No amount of spin can hide Newcastle’s awful summer

As much as Newcastle might be trying to put a positive spin on this, it’s hard for Magpies fans to find anything to feel very positive about.

In the space of just a few weeks, they’ve lost Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon, as well as manager Eddie Howe.

NUFC fans will be feeling pretty miserable about the state of the team, and no amount of money from player sales is going to make up for what these top class players brought on the pitch.

Unless major replacements are found, this is surely going to be a very long season at Newcastle.
