Arnold Discusses Brewers' 'Irresponsible' Trade Talks

There’s a world where the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a blockbuster trade for Tarik Skubal, but that’s not the world we live in.

Instead, the rich keep getting richer. The Los Angeles Dodgers were able to trade a trio of prospects for Skubal, something the Brewers absolutely had to offer, but for whatever reason, it didn’t end up working out.

Logan Henderson’s name was floated around in a potential deal with Skubal, but the 24-year-old is nowhere near comparable to River Ryan, a Triple-A pitcher that the Dodgers sent to Detroit.

At the end of the day, Brewers fans simply have to move on. This team acquired three pitchers at the deadline, and added to their catching depth with Bo Naylor. Milwaukee was able to bring in Dustin May, JoJo Romero, and Antonio Senzatela, and that’s all that matters.

Matt Arnold discusses a wild trade deadline

Matt Arnold, the Brewers’ President of Baseball Operations, joined the team’s broadcast with Brian Anderson and Vinny Rottino to discuss everything that went down in these past 24-to-48 hours.

“Prices are high this time of year… You got to give up something to get something,” he said. Ultimately, this was in reference to a pair of top 13 prospects they had to move on from in order to add May to their starting rotation.

Romero, a left-handed reliever, was also included in that deal, one that caught everyone a bit by surprise as it came in the division with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Arnold continued, “I mean, we certainly talked about doing some irresponsible stuff as well. But I would say, we tried to thread the needle, as Murph says, and hopefully we accomplish that.”

How irresponsible would it have been?

Arnold certainly got Brewers fans talking, because the word “irresponsible” has a different definition to everyone. If this team was thinking about trading Jesus Made, that’s as responsible as it gets.

That said, Luis Pena was on the table, even though it would’ve been extremely tough to move on from the No. 2 prospect for a three-month rental.

Milwaukee has a surplus of top prospects, and they have the top farm system in the league for a reason. Players like Jackson Chourio, Cooper Pratt, and Luis Lara didn’t get to this point because they were traded. The Brewers love to bet on their homegrown stars, and that’s exactly what they decided to do here in 2026.

It may not be the most exciting thing in the world, but for a small market team, it’s nearly impossible to justify these irresponsible decisions, as the ramifications could set the organization back years.
