Arizona Diamondbacks sign outfielder currently serving suspension for PED violation

The Arizona Diamondbacks have added Max Kepler, but this is not a clean midseason reinforcement.

Arizona is chasing depth now and value later. Kepler gives the club a left-handed corner outfield bat, but only after the final stretch of his PED suspension is complete.

That makes this signing less about immediate help and more about whether the Diamondbacks can squeeze useful regular-season production from a discounted veteran.

Arizona Diamondbacks take a Kepler gamble

The Arizona Diamondbacks are signing Kepler, with Bob Nightengale reporting that the outfielder remains on MLB’s restricted list after a January PED violation.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks sign OF Max Kepler, who was popped for PEDs in January and remains on the MLB restricted list. He will still have to miss 80 games and is ineligible for the postseason.”

MLB announced on January 9 that Kepler received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for Epitrenbolone, a banned performance-enhancing substance under the league’s drug program.

Max Kepler’s return date shapes the risk

The important detail is timing. Current reports say Kepler has roughly 15 games left on the suspension and can return on June 25, though he will not be eligible for the 2026 postseason.

That limits the ceiling of the deal. If Arizona reaches October, Kepler cannot be part of that roster, so the signing only makes sense if the Diamondbacks believe he can help them get there.

His 2025 season explains both the appeal and the concern. Kepler hit .216 with a .300 on-base percentage, a .391 slugging percentage, 18 home runs, and 52 RBI over 127 games with the Phillies.

Max Kepler gives Arizona a specific roster answer

Kepler’s fit is straightforward once he is eligible. Arizona can use him as a left-handed corner outfielder or designated hitter against right-handed pitching.

Corbin Carroll remains the franchise outfield anchor, while Arizona has mixed younger and right-handed options around him. Kepler gives manager Torey Lovullo a veteran bat with real pull-side power and enough defensive experience to cover the corners.

It is still a flawed bet. The suspension, age, and recent offensive dip make that clear, but the Diamondbacks are not paying for peak Kepler.

They are paying for a short regular-season window, a safer bench profile, and the chance that one veteran swing can matter before October shuts the door.
