Arch Manning has spent his entire football career virtually carrying expectations that few athletes have ever faced. Long before he became Texas’ starting quarterback, Manning was already one of the most recognizable names in sports. As the grandson of Archie Manning and nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, every throw, every decision and every appearance generated headlines. For years, the conversation centered around potential rather than production.

That is no longer the case. According to ESPN’s latest quarterback tiers rankings heading into the 2026 college football season, Manning has finally ascended to the top of the mountain. ESPN’s panel placed the Texas star in Tier 1, making him one of just two quarterbacks nationally to earn the distinction.

For the first time in his career, the hype and the performance appear perfectly aligned.

The second half of 2025 changed everything

While Manning showed flashes throughout the early portion of last season, his emergence became undeniable during the second half of the year. ESPN’s rankings highlighted a remarkable stretch in which Manning completed 74.1% of his passes while averaging 10.7 yards per attempt over Texas’ final eight games. He also threw 21 touchdown passes against just three interceptions during that span.

Those numbers transformed him from a highly regarded prospect into one of college football’s most feared quarterbacks. The improvement wasn’t simply statistical. Manning looked more comfortable operating Steve Sarkisian’s offense, made quicker decisions and displayed the downfield accuracy that made him such a coveted recruit coming out of high school.

As ESPN noted in its rankings, Manning produced an elite passing grade of 90.5 over those final eight contests, trailing only former LSU star Garrett Nussmeier among returning quarterbacks.

Texas has championship expectations

With Manning now firmly established as the face of the program, expectations in Austin have never been higher. Texas enters the season as one of the favorites to compete for a national championship, and much of that confidence stems from the quarterback position. The Longhorns no longer have questions about who will lead the offense.

Instead, the discussion centers on how far Manning can take the program. His combination of arm talent, athleticism and experience has many analysts projecting him as a future first-round NFL Draft pick. More importantly for Texas, it has positioned the Longhorns as a legitimate contender in the expanded College Football Playoff era.

The pressure isn’t going anywhere

The spotlight surrounding Manning will always exist. That’s simply part of being a Manning. But for the first time, the conversation isn’t centered on his famous last name or the expectations that come with it.

ESPN’s quarterback rankings reflect something much more important: production. After years of anticipation, Arch Manning has finally reached the point where he’s being discussed not because of who he’s related to, but because he’s one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

And entering 2026, that distinction feels fully earned.
