Anthony Seigler was a first-round draft pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Cartersville (Georgia) High School, so the fact that he’s hitting well right now for the Boston Red Sox isn’t necessarily a surprise.

Except back then, he wasn’t a Red Sox draft pick. He was taken by the New York Yankees with the No. 23 overall pick in that draft.

So now, the 5-foot-9 Seigler is breaking out at the MLB level while playing for the Yankees’ biggest rival.

He’s certainly earning some early fans in Fenway Park. Entering Tuesday’s action, Seigler is hitting .308 through 52 at bats in the 2026 MLB season.

It’s just been a circuitous route to this point.

How did the Red Sox get Anthony Seigler?

Seigler’s path to the Red Sox started with an inability to break through in pinstripes.

He spent six years in the Yankees’ minor league system, but he never got promoted to the major leagues.

A player’s contract after the draft can last up to six seasons in the minor leagues before it either needs to be extended, or it ends.

Seigler just reached his expiration. He became a minor league free agent on Nov. 4, 2024.

Two weeks later, he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Seigler made the majors with the Brewers in 2025, but he was just 12-for-62 (.194 average), and so he didn’t make a huge case for himself.

The Brewers made Seigler part of the Caleb Durbin trade this offseason, so he got another fresh start.

He hit .290 with an .844 OPS through 37 games with Triple-A Worcester to earn the call up, and he’s stayed hot in Boston.

It’s certainly a cool rise for Seigler — it just took a while.
