Anthony Gordon is already showing Barcelona why they chose him over Marcus Rashford
Barcelona faced a difficult decision last summer.
Marcus Rashford had enjoyed a successful loan spell, contributing 14 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances. Yet instead of making his move permanent, the club decided to invest heavily in Anthony Gordon.
It was a decision that raised questions at the time. Rashford had already proved himself at Barcelona, understood Hansi Flick’s system and was available for a relatively modest €30 million.
Gordon, meanwhile, represented a much bigger financial commitment. However, just a few months into the new season, Barça’s reasoning is becoming increasingly clear.
Rashford delivered, but Gordon offers something different
There is no denying Rashford’s contribution to Barcelona’s title-winning campaign.
His pace, finishing and ability to attack open spaces made him a valuable attacking option. He also provided important goals and assists despite not always being a guaranteed starter.
However, his influence gradually declined, particularly in matches where Barcelona faced compact defensive blocks.
Flick’s demanding pressing system also exposed certain limitations in Rashford’s off-the-ball contribution.

Gordon has offered a different solution. The former Newcastle winger has started seven of Barcelona’s opening 10 matches, registering two goals and five assists.
His performances have demonstrated why Flick and Deco chose him over his more experienced England counterpart.
Gordon is giving Flick exactly what he needs
Gordon’s biggest strength is not simply his speed or directness. It is how naturally he fits into Barcelona’s system.
He presses aggressively, tracks opposing full-backs and constantly makes runs that stretch defensive lines.
His willingness to work without possession allows Barcelona to maintain their intensity even when opponents attempt to play through the press.
When Rashford replaced an injured Raphinha last season, the drop-off in off-the-ball intensity was often difficult to justify.
Gordon helps Barça in this regard. Already known for his off-the-ball work, the 25-year-old has taken it to a whole new level in Spain.
There is also an important attacking benefit. With Lamine Yamal regularly demanding possession on the right, Gordon provides balance by attacking space on the opposite flank.

Rather than constantly looking for the ball at his feet, he makes intelligent movements that create passing opportunities for Pedri and Barça’s other creative players.
Barcelona made a decision for the future
The decision not to sign Rashford was not a reflection of his quality. Barça simply identified a player better suited to their system and long-term plans.
At 25, Gordon also offers greater potential for development and a longer period at his peak. He has already shown signs of doing just that in these early weeks.
Ten matches are nowhere near enough to judge the transfer, and the price tag will obviously bring plenty of pressure.
However, the early signs suggest Barcelona have signed more than just another talented winger.
Rashford helped Barça win. Gordon is being trusted with the responsibility of helping them build something much more future-proof.
Based on the early evidence, Barça’s gamble seems to be paying off, and it remains to be seen how the Englishman gets on during his time at the Camp Nou.
