Another Brewers starting pitching option lands on the injured list

Three days after a two-inning relief appearance, the Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Coleman Crow on the injured list with a right forearm flexor strain on June 12.

Milwaukee recalled reliever Craig Yoho from Class AAA Nashville, where he had been optioned to begin the week.

It’s a concerning diagnosis for Crow, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 while with the New York Mets.

The 25-year-old missed nearly all of the 2023 and 2024 seasons, during which he was traded to both the Los Angeles Angels and Brewers. Crow made his major-league debut this April and had made five appearances and four starts for Milwaukee.

Crow becomes the fourth starting pitching option for the Brewers on the injured list, joining Logan Henderson, Brandon Woodruff and Quinn Priester. The Brewers also currently have relievers DL Hall, Jared Koenig, Brian Fitzpatrick, Rob Zastryzny and Angel Zerpa on the IL.

Priester, who is on the 60-day IL, was returned from his rehab assignment the day prior, June 11, and will reevaluate his next steps with the team as he tries to recover from thoracic outlet syndrome.

Across two separate rehab assignments that included eight outings, Priester has gone 16 innings and allowed 28 earned runs, walking 24 and uncorking six wild pitches. Murphy indicated Priester is not still dealing with nerve compression in his shoulder but has still been experiencing some discomfort.

Still seeking answers, Priester will “likely” head to see Dr. Gregory Pearl, a Dallas-based vascular specialist, in the coming days after his rehab from TOS hadn’t gone as hoped.

Woodruff is back with the Brewers but indications don’t seem to point to a return to the rotation just yet.

Woodruff, who’s been out since April 30 with a right shoulder ailment that was initially referred to as “dead arm”, allowed three runs on five hits and two walks and worked into the fourth inning in a rehab outing in the Arizona Complex League June 9. His fastball velocity averaged 90.7 mph in the outing and he mixed in a heavy usage of cutters and changeups, but Murphy said he isn’t reading anything into the outing.

“You look at these rehab assignments and just throw it away,” Murphy said. “You got a real pitcher on your hands. This is a guy with a lot of major-league experience.”

As for the return of Koenig, the other rehabbing big-league pitcher, Murphy simply said that “he is working his way back.”
