Anambra cracks down on seven schools over illegal graduation levies

The affected schools are Kings School, Amawbia; Paraiso Montessori School, Awka; Bluepoint School, Awka; Favour Dot Queen Academy, Awka; Little Angel British School, Aguleri; Handmaid Infant Jesus Nursery and Primary School, Awka; and Frobel Height Academy, Awka.

Ogugua explained that the enforcement exercise is intended to stop schools from imposing unauthorised charges on parents under the guise of graduation ceremonies and to ensure that both private and public schools operate in line with the state’s education policies.

He noted that the government was particularly concerned about the financial burden compulsory graduation fees place on parents, especially at a time when many families are already grappling with rising education expenses.

The commissioner also cautioned other schools across the state against flouting the directive, warning that monitoring teams would continue inspections across education zones to identify and sanction erring institutions.

He added that the policy forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen discipline in the education sector, uphold established standards and protect parents from unnecessary financial obligations.

The Ministry of Education urged school proprietors, administrators, parents and other stakeholders to support the initiative by ensuring full compliance, noting that the sanctions underscore the government’s resolve to eliminate unauthorised charges and enforce accountability within schools across Anambra State.
