Alexis Mac Allister shines in Liverpool win over Villarreal
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice to guide Liverpool to a thrilling 4-3 victory against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Manager Andoni Iraola made six changes to the team that defeated Brentford 2-1 at the weekend.
Iraola’s plan did not seem to work as Liverpool conceded twice inside the opening half-hour.
George Mikautaze pounced on an error from Virgil van Dijk to open the scoring before Sergi Cardona added another with a fine finish.
Mac Allister initiated Liverpool’s comeback by heading home Kostas Tsimikas’ corner.
Ronald Araujo and Rio Ngumoha then combined to level the scores on the stroke of half-time.
Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead after the hour mark, sweeping home a pinpoint cross from Ngumoha.
Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back to threaten a draw but the hosts held on to secure maximum points and join Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Champions League table.
Mac Allister admitted last month he felt ‘very sad’ that the Merseyside club declined to offer him a new contract.
The Argentine confirmed he had offers to leave in the summer, but he opted to stay because of his love for Liverpool.
Since making those comments, Mac Allister has been producing impressive displays on the pitch.
If he continues his current form, there is no reason why Liverpool will not choose to extend his deal.
