Alamo Heights puts on offensive clinic in rout of Somerset to stay unbeaten

It took exactly 100 years for Alamo Heights to even its all-time series against Somerset after upending the Bulldogs 43-14 on Friday night at Orem Stadium.

The No. 9 Mules scored on four straight possessions in the first half to jettison to victory and improve to 2-0.

“We came out a little slow, but that didn’t stop us,” said Mules senior quarterback Easton Stone, who passed for 261 yards and accounted for three touchdowns. “We just stuck to our assignments and everything, and we got back on track. I think we cleaned it up, and we’re looking good.”

In all likelihood, no one who attended Friday’s game was alive when the teams last met in 1926, which resulted in a 70-0 victory for the Mules. That was their first victory in three meetings.

Friday night’s game didn’t quite have that pace, but the Mules enjoyed a 589-192 advantage in total yards. Junior running back William Bishop displayed his versatility by rushing for a 43-yard touchdown from the wildcat formation and a 71-yard score on a typical handoff.

“He’s a dual threat,” Stone said of Bishop. “He can play QB. He can play running back. We even put him on defense. I just love having him out there, and when he’s out there, I feel safe, and I feel he’s going to make a play.”

Bishop rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. He also caught three passes for 62 yards. He had a 43-yard catch on third-and-10 that led to Blake Bader’s 4-yard scoring run that made it 29-7 late in the first half.

“I think I’m a pretty versatile player,” Bishop said. “Being able to be a quarterback, obviously I can throw it a little bit. It allows out team to spread out the defense, and the defense might not know what’s coming. From that aspect, I think it really opens up things and holes and other things for me to get downhill and score.”

The Mules shined for the second straight week after downing Class 6A Pieper 43-14 last week. They close non-district play at Class 6A Southwest on Friday.

Bishop’s 43-yard touchdown run put the Mules ahead 14-0 late in the first quarter.  Earlier, Charlie Mitchell caught a 10-yard pass from Stone at the 3:20 mark that made it 7-0. Bishop’s score was set up by a fumble recovery by Robert Conn at the Bulldogs’ 41-yard line.

The No. 18 Bulldogs (0-1) had some flashes on offense – like John Alvarez’s 27-yard scoring catch that pulled them to within 14-7 on the first play of the second quarter – but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Alamo Heights.

They fell short of the offensive firepower they showed last week during their opener against Southside, which was canceled because of weather late in the first half while holding a 35-18 lead. The game didn’t count as a result because it didn’t go one full half.

The Mules finished with four touchdowns on the ground. Stone scored from 18 yards out to make it 21-7. Stone also connected with senior Landon Balldin for a 41-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Mules are halfway through the non-district portion of the season. They have games against Southwest and Buda Johnson before opening up District 13-5A-II play against Boerne on Sept. 25 in a rematch of their state quarterfinal last December in which the Greyhounds prevailed 56-49 in overtime.

“I think these four games are really big for us to build that momentum going into district,” Bishop said. “Obviously we want to win all four of these, but they don’t impact playoff seeding. Every game is a new game. It’s 0-0. We have to come out and have a great week of practice and just continue to do our jobs.”
