Alabama's Doris Lemngole Continues to Make History with SEC Runner of the Year Honor

Alabama track and field star Doris Lemngole added another major accomplishment to her already historic career on Monday, as she was named the SEC Women’s Outdoor Runner of the Year.

At this point, it almost feels like we’re running out of ways to describe what Lemngole continues to accomplish in an Alabama uniform.

The Crimson Tide standout has spent the last few seasons rewriting record books, winning championships, and establishing herself as one of the most dominant distance runners in the country.

This latest honor is simply the newest chapter in what has become one of the greatest track and field careers Alabama has ever seen.

Lemngole becomes the first Alabama athlete to earn the SEC Women’s Outdoor Runner of the Year award since Tamara Clark won the honor in 2021. Considering the level of talent that has come through Tuscaloosa over the years, that achievement alone speaks volumes.

The award comes after another spectacular performance at the SEC Outdoor Championships, where Lemngole proved once again that she is in a class of her own.

She captured conference titles in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run, sweeping the two events for the second consecutive season. Her dominance throughout the meet helped her earn the SEC Women’s Commissioner’s Trophy after scoring a meet-high 20 individual points for the Crimson Tide.

As impressive as the double championship was, it was her performance in the steeplechase that truly stood out.

Lemngole crossed the finish line in 9:18.66, setting both meet and facility records while posting what was the fastest time in the world at that point in the season. The victory also secured her place in SEC history, making her the first athlete ever to win the women’s steeplechase title three consecutive times.

Think about that for a moment.

The Southeastern Conference is widely regarded as one of the premier track and field conferences in the nation.

Year after year, Olympic-caliber athletes compete for conference championships. Yet no woman had ever won three straight SEC steeplechase titles until Doris Lemngole.

She wasn’t finished there.

Lemngole followed that performance by winning the 5,000-meter title with a time of 15:30.69, further cementing her status as one of the nation’s elite distance runners.

What makes her accomplishments even more remarkable is the consistency.

This isn’t a breakout season or a one-time championship run.

Lemngole has been delivering elite performances every time she steps on the track, and her ability to shine on the biggest stages has become expected.

As Alabama continues its postseason journey, Lemngole remains one of the program’s brightest stars and one of the top runners in collegiate track and field. With her SEC Runner of the Year honor now added to an already crowded trophy case, she has once again proven why she’s one of the most decorated athletes competing for the Crimson Tide today.

And if history is any indication, she’s far from finished.
