Ajinkya Rahane to receive substantial monthly pension from BCCI following retirement

Ajinkya Rahane brought the curtain down on his playing career on July 30, closing out a journey that included leading India to a landmark Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in Australia during the 2020-21 series as stand-in skipper.

As the seasoned batter transitions into life after playing days, he’ll naturally look toward fresh sources of income, and in that regard, he can count on the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Back in 2022, the BCCI overhauled its pension structure for cricketers who had hung up their boots. This change was rolled out during Sourav Ganguly’s time as BCCI President.

How much will Ajinkya Rahane earn as pension from BCCI?

Given his tally of 85 Test appearances, Rahane qualifies for the board’s highest pension bracket.

Players with a similar level of experience previously received Rs 50,000 every month, but that figure was bumped up to Rs 70,000 monthly four years ago under the revised policy.

As a result, Rahane will now draw a fixed Rs 70,000 each month going forward.

“It is extremely important that the financial well-being of our former cricketers is taken care of. The players remain the lifeline and, as a Board, it is our duty to be by their side once their playing days are over. The umpires have been unsung heroes, and the BCCI truly values their contribution,” Ganguly said at the time.

What comes next for Ajinkya Rahane?

Rahane hasn’t yet spelt out exactly what his post-retirement path will involve.

He has, however, indicated an interest in mentoring upcoming cricketers as the next phase of his journey.

It’s worth noting that his pension eligibility comes with a caveat: should he take on any official position within the BCCI, whether as an administrator or a coach, his pension payments would be paused for the duration of that role, since he would then be drawing a salary for those responsibilities instead.
