ADC petitions PSC, IGP over alleged illegal detention of members, supporters in Kebbi

The Kebbi Caucus of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the National Assembly has petitioned the Police Service Commission, PSC, and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, over the alleged illegal detention of party members and supporters in the state.

The caucus made the call at a news conference organised in collaboration with the Kebbi State ADC Chairman, Safiyanu Bala, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Senator Garba Maidoki said the circumstances surrounding the arrests raised concerns about due process and citizens’ fundamental rights.

Maidoki said the party recognised the responsibility of the police and other law enforcement agencies to investigate suspected offences but stressed that political affiliation should not be used as a basis for deprivation of liberty.

He said criminal allegations should be investigated objectively and handled through established legal procedures.

Maidoki said a formal complaint concerning the conduct of some police officers would be submitted to the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police.

He urged the authorities to determine whether any police officer acted contrary to the law, police regulations or professional standards.

The senator said the party would also bring the cases to the attention of Amnesty International over allegations of excessive or arbitrary use of police powers against opposition supporters.

Maidoki urged authorities to ensure that any ADC member or supporter in custody was treated in accordance with the Constitution, including access to legal representation and the right to know the basis of their arrest.

He also called on the Kebbi State Government and relevant authorities to ensure that public institutions were not used to intimidate citizens because of their political affiliations or peaceful political activities.
