Abia Govt demands action from security agencies, monarchs over vandalization of electricity installations

Abia State Government has expressed concern over the increasing vandalisation of government property across the state, particularly, electricity installations.

The state government which lamented that the destruction of public infrastructure is putting more financial burden on it, charged security agencies and community leaders to end the menace.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made the call on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

While stating its ongoing efforts at restoring power supply to different communities, the Abia State government regretted that vandals are sabotaging electricity projects already completed in some other parts of the state.

It mandated security agencies, presidents of town unions and traditional rulers in the state to be more proactive in ending vandalism and looting.

“The state government has expressed dismay at the rate of destruction of government property, particularly the vandalisation of power project across the state which disrupt the flow of electricity.

“Presidents general of town unions, traditional rulers and security agencies are advised to devise new strategies in curbing the menace,” the commissioner for information said.

Also, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, dismissed fears that residents of World Bank Housing Estate in Umuahia would be compelled to install pre-paid electricity meters in their mini-flats.

Meanwhile, the state government has commiserated with some communities in the state where flooding incidents claimed lives and destroyed property.

The Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, who attributed the flooding crisis to climate change and human factors, said that the officials of the state government were visiting the affected communities with relief materials.
