ABC Does Right By Its Longest-Running Series After 19 Years

· · 4 min read

Television dynasties are not built by accident. Sustaining a TV series over more than a decade requires a delicate balance of intriguing characters, intense storylines, brand loyalty, and genre discipline. Experimenting with adjacent genres can sometimes be a great way to shake things up and offer something unique for the fanbase, but it can also dilute the core appeal that drew audiences in the first place.

ABC is noticing that with its most recent decision. For two decades, viewers have loyally tuned into Grey’s Anatomy. They’ve stuck through horrific hospital attacks, plane crashes, and the ever-revolving Chief of Surgery door. Yet, despite how long it’s been on the air, it hasn’t had a spinoff that has lasted nearly as long, or one that loyal viewers have necessarily given a chance.

Grey’s Anatomy Is Launching A New Medical Spinoff 19 Years After Private Practice

This isn’t for lack of trying, either. There have been two spinoffs, but only one of them has focused on medical emergencies. Even then, Private Practice didn’t quite have the same intense effect as a hospital drama. Finally, ABC is delivering the medical-based spinoff that could help to develop this franchise in the way that many other shows have, offering the best chance of success that could lead to even more spinoffs even long after Grey’s Anatomy comes to an end.

The new medical drama isn’t the first time Grey’s Anatomy has launched a spinoff. In 2007, Private Practice premiered, bringing the first spinoff to life. One of the reasons it became so popular was that it continued to develop Dr. Addison Montgomery, as she decided to choose herself, both personally and professionally. However, it remained popular as it offered something similar to Grey’s Anatomy, focusing on medical situations that needed creative solutions.

It’s baffling that it’s taken 19 years to bring another medical spinoff with Grey’s Anatomy Texas. In 2018, the second spinoff, Station 19, premiered, and while it was fun, it didn’t quite capture the same audience. This focused more on first responder and fire emergencies. It put lives on the line, but the tension and fear came from deadly fires rather than seeing how doctors worked together to solve a complicated medical problem.

Why Grey’s Anatomy Texas Has A Better Chance Of Succeeding

While the One Chicago franchise has succeeded by leaning into different, connected genres, some of the most successful franchises have delivered the same core framework just with a different setting. Grey’s Anatomy tried to deliver the same as Chicago Fire with Station 19, but it didn’t draw in the whole fan base. While Private Practice was a medical drama, it didn’t quite have the same high stakes that emergency medicine brings.

NCIS led to multiple spinoffs that followed the same format of investigating crimes but in different locations. Law & Order has created successful shows that follow the same detective work that leads into the legal cases. Then there are CSI and FBI, which developed spinoffs that continued the procedural format but across the country or around the world. All three franchises created loyalty from the parent show to just give each spinoff a chance, and from there, it was up to the writers to deliver.

If this medical drama wants to succeed as a franchise, it needs to focus on the reason people watched in the first place. Emergency medical situations create tension and fear. The Texas-based spinoff promises to do that, giving it the best chance of success. Not only can it bring crazy and wild emergencies like car accidents, bridge collapses, sports accidents, and even potentially forest fire emergencies, it does it with the small-town medical center setting.

The doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial have some of the best technology and a residency program that doctors have always wanted to be part of. This Lone Star-set drama will bring limited resources, creating the need for more creative solutions and doctors working closely together if they want to save lives the way Grey’s Anatomy manages it.

Grey’s Anatomy

Created by Shonda Rhimes, long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy depicts the professional and personal lives of the employees of a Seattle hospital.
