Aaron Paul's Cameo In Clayface Explained (Who Is He Playing?)

· · 5 min read

Warning: Contains spoilers for Clayface! The DC Universe adds several new cast members thanks to Clayface, but one surprise cameo adds a major star to the franchise in an unexpected fashion. The third DCU movie is led by Tom Rhys Harries, who plays Matt Hagen, an actor who loses his movie star looks and undergoes an experimental procedure to try to get them back.

Much of Clayface is put on Harries’ shoulders, but he’s also surrounded by a great collection of stars. Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, the scientist who creates AI nanobots that can heal humans. Max Minghella (The Social Network) plays John Borrelli, a Gotham City detective and Caitlyn’s fiancé. Eddie Marsan, David Dencik, Nancy Carroll, Joshua James, and Joana Ribeiro play other key roles.

Even though Clayface is part of the DCU, the movie does not go overboard with its broader universe connections. There’s no cameo from the franchise’s lead David Corenswet’s Superman or its favorite recurring character, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner. The entire runtime comes and goes without Clayface including Batman, too.

However, Clayface does include a cameo from Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul. The Emmy-winning performer’s appearance is exciting, but it also leaves major questions, considering he is barely on screen and appears with no real fanfare. That might leave viewers wondering if Paul has a bigger future in the DCU future or why he is in the movie at all.

When Aaron Paul Appears In Clayface & Why You Might’ve Missed Him

It isn’t until Clayface‘s ending that Aaron Paul appears. The third act features a long sequence at Markos Szabo’s nightclub as Matt goes there to finish his vengeance against those who ruined his face. Instead of just walking into the club looking like himself, Matt uses his transformational abilities to take the shape of many different people to try and get closer to Szabo.

This builds to a great sequence where Matt flips back and forth between several different appearances to take on different goons. All of the forms Matt takes are other people shown at the club, except for one. When he comes face-to-face with one of Szabo’s henchmen, Matt’s face changes and we see Aaron Paul’s face. He has longer hair and facial hair. It is the first and only time Paul appears in Clayface.

As a result, his DC cameo amounts to only a few seconds of screen time. He doesn’t get any dialogue, nor does he get directly involved in the fighting taking place. Matt switches his appearance again before engaging with the gangster. It’s easy to miss Paul’s cameo due to the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it quality, and since he wasn’t confirmed to be part of the cast before; he’s not listed in the credits either.

Is Aaron Paul’s Clayface Cameo Setting Up The DCU’s Future?

Even with such a small part, Paul winds up being the biggest and most recognizable actor featured in Clayface. His work throughout the Breaking Bad universe, Westworld, and other projects have made him incredibly popular. One would think that if DC was going to bring him aboard the franchise, it would be for a significant role, or at least one that amounts to more than a cameo.

Superhero movies often include major star cameos as a promise of future stories. DC Studios had Milly Alcock cameo in Superman ahead of Supergirl. However, something similar is not happening with Clayface‘s major cameo. There is no suggestion that he will be brought back in upcoming DCU movies or shows.

Paul absolutely is not the franchise’s Batman, a newly cast DCU Justice League hero, or any significant character like that. This looks to be a role that Paul took either just to say he did it or because his part was reduced in the final cut. It’s a part that could only be built on depending on how the DCU handles Clayface moving forward.

The result is Clayface being a one-and-done appearance for Paul within the DCU. The only way that probably changes is if Gunn winds up casting him in a different, bigger role down the road.

Who Is Aaron Paul Really Supposed To Be Playing & Why Is His Role So Small?

Even though Paul has a quick role in Clayface, the movie does seemingly confirm his identity. When Matt takes this form, the henchman he’s facing immediately looks confused and refers to him as Jimmy One-Nut. That is the name of Matt’s father, as confirmed earlier on in Clayface.

This information comes during Matt and Szabo’s initial encounter in Matt’s apartment after hooking up with Mia. Szabo and his goons talk about how Matt’s father used to be a local gang member and make fun of him for, apparently, only having one nut. The gangsters mention how this often made Jimmy angry, which they assume led to him taking it out on Matt.

While Clayface makes an effort to connect that backstory to Paul’s cameo with the henchman’s reaction, it makes the Breaking Bad star’s appearance no less shocking. It suggests that something changed behind-the-scenes during the movie’s production, with Paul possibly set to have a larger role than this originally.

It seems likely that Paul was meant to appear in flashback scenes to Matt’s childhood that would have given audiences a first-hand look at his abusive upbringing. Clayface‘s IMDb cast listing adds more fuel to this belief. Seth Isaac Thomas is credited as playing “Young Matt Hagen,” but there are no scenes in the movie showing Matt’s childhood. Such scenes must have been filmed and cut during post-production.

That would explain why Paul’s role in Clayface is so small. It also means there is a chance that DC Studios could show more of his performance once it’s time to release the movie on digital and physical. A flashback with Matt and his father could be featured among Clayface‘s deleted scenes. There could even be scenes where Matt transforms into his dad earlier in the film and confronts the demons of his past.

Gunn, Watkins, or Paul have yet to add further clarity into what happened with his Clayface role, but hopefully there will be an opportunity learn and see more in the future, even if the actor doesn’t reprise this role in future DCU productions.
