A major college basketball shake-up and its effect on Kentucky

· · 1 min read

On Monday morning, the college basketball world experienced a seismic shake-up with the news that Michigan Wolverines head coach Dusty May was leaving to take the same position with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. It’s a shocking move that will certainly have an effect on the 2026-27 season, and potentially a direct effect on the Kentucky Wildcats.

Obviously, who Michigan hires as a replacement will be key. They will need to move quickly, as they try to keep their roster intact. Players will have a 15-day window where they can leave the program and go elsewhere that opens five days after they hire a coach, or automatically if they don’t hire a coach within 30 days.

So how does the change affect Kentucky?

Most immediately, it improves the chances of the Wildcats landing Nikola Kusturica. Most analysts consider the UCLA Bruins and the Wolverines as Kentucky’s top competitors for the Serbian wing. May’s leaving could take Michigan out of the running.

In addition, if any of Michigan’s current roster does decide to leave, the Wildcats have an open roster spot. A 2026 recruit like Brandon McCoy would have many suitors, and Mark Pope was in on him before he committed to Michigan.

The next step will be waiting to see who is hired to replace May. That coach will then have five days to convince the players to stay before the transfer window opens. If he can’t, there will be a rush to land those that leave.

The summer months are usually fairly slow in terms of big news. This changes that. It’s a major story that will have a dramatic effect on the college basketball world and, potentially, on the Kentucky Wildcats.
