‘A little rocky’ – Sophie Cunningham opens up on Fever’s mixed form after FIBA World Cup

Sophie Cunningham has been discussing the Indiana Fever’s form since the WNBA returned from its break due to the FIBA World Cup earlier this month.

Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston both competed for Team USA in Germany, helping to secure the gold.

But speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, Cunningham has suggested she expected the Fever to flow ‘a little bit more’ after they returned, but that did not happen.

Speaking on ‘No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham & Drew Hanlen’ about how the Fever have fared since the WNBA returned after the World Cup, she stated: “Okay, so teamwise, first game against Toronto, man, I thought that honestly, and I think all of us felt like we were feeling good and confident.

“But it was a little rocky, you know, when you bring AB [Boston] and C [Clark] back after them winning gold, I thought it was going to like flow a little bit, a little bit more, but it didn’t.”

The Fever then played against and lost to the Washington Mystics in their following game, and Cunningham described that as ‘one of our worst games of the whole season’.

She continued: “And that’s okay. We still got the dub [against Toronto]. Washington, though, that might be one that our whole team is just wanting to flush because that was probably our, one of our worst games of the whole season.

“And it sucks that it happened right now, but at least it happened now and not during playoffs. And so I think you can still learn from it a little bit.”

The Fever ended their regular season with a 66-86 loss against the Minnesota Lynx, dropping down to sixth in the league.

In turn, they are now playing the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the playoffs instead of the Atlanta Dream, whom they would have faced had they beaten the Lynx in their last outing.
