A Duck Wearing a Scotland Flag Became the Tartan Army’s Most Unexpected World Cup Recruit

Scotland’s Tartan Army has brought kilts, bagpipes, flags, songs, and packed bars to the 2026 World Cup. In Providence, Rhode Island, the traveling fan base picked up one more unexpected symbol: a duck.

Dawn the Duck, also known as Dawny, joined Scotland supporters during a pre-match bagpipe march while wearing a small Scotland flag and a gold medallion, according to Reuters.

The Providence duck became one of the tournament’s more unusual fan-culture moments.

Reuters reported that the duck led the march in Rhode Island ahead of Scotland’s World Cup match against Morocco.

Dawn Was Already Famous in Providence

Reuters described Dawn as a Providence duck with a large social media following and a reputation as a local “rally duck.”

Dawn first gained wider attention in 2024 after appearing at a Providence College Friars basketball game. Reuters reported that the duck was later banned from the stadium over animal welfare concerns.

That did not end Dawn’s public life in the city. Reuters reported that Dawn still appears at events around Providence and has more than 30,000 Instagram followers.

Scotland Fans Turned Providence Into a World Cup Stop

Dawn’s Tartan Army moment happened as many Scotland supporters chose to stay in Providence, roughly 25 miles from the stadium hosting the team’s first two Group C matches.

Boston.com reported that Dawn led the Tartan Army on a Providence march with the flag of Scotland attached.

Reuters also reported that Scottish fans made a major impression in Boston, where bars saw huge demand as supporters celebrated Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage.

Dawn was not the only duck to become part of World Cup fan culture. Reuters noted that Mexico fans had already adopted Merlin, another duck, as an unofficial mascot during the tournament.
