97% have host country’s agreement – Nigerian govt on Tinubu’s ambassadors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 97 per cent of ambassadors appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have received the agreement of their respective host countries.

The ministry disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa on the official handle of the government office.

According to the statement, President Tinubu appointed 69 ambassadors-designate after their screening and confirmation by the Senate.

Of the 69 nominees, 65 have so far received the agréement of their receiving countries.

The statement reads in full:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the public and the international community that ninety-seven percent (97%) of the Ambassadors appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, have successfully received the agrément of their respective host countries.

“The Ministry notes that the diplomatic process of seeking and obtaining agrément is progressing smoothly and successfully, in line with established international diplomatic practice.

“The Ministry recalls that a total of 69 Ambassadors-designate were assigned to various countries by Mr. President following their screening and confirmation by the Senate.

“Of this number, 65 have been accepted by their receiving countries. The Ambassador-designate to the Republic of Togo declined the offer of appointment; consequently, a request for agrément was not submitted.

“In addition, the Ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria passed away in April 2026, and the process of appointing a replacement is currently underway.

“Accordingly, there are only two countries from which the Ministry is yet to receive confirmation of agrément. However, assurances have been received from both friendly countries that their consent will be conveyed in due course.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to assure Nigerians and the international community that it is actively engaging the relevant authorities in the two countries and remains confident that the outstanding agréments will be received in due course.

“It is important to note that the majority of Nigeria’s Ambassadors have already arrived in their respective host countries and have presented their Letters of Credence, thereby formally commencing their duties as the principal representatives of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad and advancing the country’s foreign policy objectives and national interest.
