75 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1975 season

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Tuesday, June 30, is 75 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 75 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1975 season for the Cardinals.

In 1975, the Cardinals made it to the playoffs. They went 11-3 in the regular season, finishing first in the NFC East, winning nine of their final 10 games.

However, they lost in the divisional round to the LA Rams 35-23.

They had a top-10 offense, scoring 25.4 points per game.

Several players received individual honors:

• QB Jim Hart: Pro Bowl
• RB Terry Metcalf: Pro Bowl, second-team All-Pro
• K Jim Bakken, Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro
• FB Jim Otis: Pro Bowl
• WR Mel Gray: Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro
• CB Roger Wehrli: Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro
• RG Conrad Dobler: Pro Bowl
• RT Dan Dierdorf: Pro Bowl, second-team All-Pro

Hart passed for 2,507 yards, 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He led four fourth-quarter comebacks and four game-winning drives.

Metcalf led the NFL in all-purpose yardage. He rushed for 816 yards and nine touchdowns. He had 43 catches for 378 yards and three scores. He returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

Gray had 48 catches for 926 yards and a league-leading 11 touchdown receptions. Cornerback Norm Thompson had seven interceptions, while Wehrli was next with six.
