Popular shows like Supernatural have a brother duo as their main characters, and one of Disney’s biggest hits, Frozen, is all about the love between sisters rather than a princess and prince finding each other. Besides brother and brother and sister with sister duos, though, there are also very memorable brother and sister characters at the heart of the best TV shows and movies ever.

The relationships between siblings can lead to some unique storylines within television or movies. Whether it’s being as protective as possible or having characters who wind each other up, there is something funny and relatable about the most famous brother and sister duos, and it’s led to tons of great team-ups in entertainment.

David & Jennifer

Pleasantville (1998)

Before they became superstars in Hollywood, Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon collaborated as siblings in the charming and inventive fantasy story Pleasantville. The two play David and Jennifer, a polar-opposite brother and sister duo. Jennifer is a pretty and popular girl who seeks status by dating the most eligible bachelors in school.

Meanwhile, David is more interested in staying in and watching his favorite show, the old black-and-white sitcom Pleasantville. However, the two find themselves magically transported into the show itself, having to fit into the cookie-cutter 1950s-era story.

The two make for authentic bickering siblings, with the stress of their bizarre situation only making their relationship more fractured. Along the way, they also both learn new things about themselves while stuck in this clean-cut world, while also influencing those around them to embrace their passions.

Milo & Maggie

The Skeleton Twins (2014)

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are known for being two of the funniest cast members on SNL. It would seem like a movie in which they play siblings would be a laugh-out-loud fun ride, but The Skeleton Twins is actually a great display of the two actors’ incredible dramatic talents. Milo and Maggie Dean are two adult twins who have fallen out of touch only to be reunited at a time when they are both going through some horrible personal struggles.

The movie starts with Maggie’s attempt at suicide being interrupted by news that Milo attempted to take his own life. That is a dark place for the story to begin, and the film explores the traumatic past these two deal with and how it has fed into their current struggles. However, there is also some great humor in the movie as well. Wiig and Hader have great chemistry as seen in the scene where they lip-sync together, perfectly displaying the siblings who share the same quirky sense of humor.

Finney & Gwen

The Black Phone (2021)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/the-black-phone-22.jpeg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

The Black Phone is best remembered for introducing the terrifying villain known as The Grabber. While he is certainly an effective horror movie villain, one of the best aspects of the film is the brother-sister relationship between young siblings, Finney and Gwen. From the beginning of the movie, this brother and sister duo have a bond forged in pain as they live with their abusive father and lean on each other for support.

When Finney is taken by The Grabber, the movie focuses on his attempts to outsmart the killer and escape. However, the subplot of the story involves Gwen going on a mission to find Finney and bring him home. It is a movie that highlights how a loving relationship like this can help overcome hardships and provide love when there doesn’t seem to be much out there.

Chad & Mindy

Scream (2022)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/scream-6-chad-tara-mindy-anika-sam.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

The Scream movies have always been strong additions to the genre of horror movies about groups of friends. However, the 2022 reboot/sequel of Scream made the clever choice of making some of these friends siblings. While Sam and Tara are the sister pair at the front of the new Scream movies, Chad and Mindy often steal the show as the fun new cast members. Chad is the confident and popular jock who avoids the negative stereotypes by also being a nice guy, while Mindy takes over from her uncle Randy Meeks in being the horror expert of the group.

The two are funny, brave, and clever additions to the new take on the franchise, elevating the cast of younger victims. They also appear to be virtually unstoppable as both Chad and Mindy have been stabbed in the two Scream movies they appeared in only to be revealed to be alive in the end.

Kendall, Shiv, And Roman

Succession (2018-2023)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/succession-season-4.jpeg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Succession was a show about the entire Roy family and their dysfunctional relationships. However, by the end of Succession, it was all about the siblings. Kendall, Shiv, and Roman were introduced in the very first episode as siblings who seemed to love each other while not being able to stand each other. They would be on each other’s side while also scheming behind each other’s backs. Mostly, they were all connected by the hold their father, Logan, had over them.

Connor was their brother, but he wasn’t as prominent or as close as these three. The siblings had moments of connection only in the way these Roy children could. This includes the moment Shiv and Roman console Kendall and convince him he shouldn’t feel guilty for causing an accident that killed a young man. By the final season of the show, with Logan dead, the focus on these three elevated the show, and seeing their wavering alliance lead all the way to the finale made for an exhilarating conclusion.

Tina, Gene, & Louise

Bob’s Burgers (2011 – Present)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/bobs-burgers-louise-no-country-4.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

There are several great brother-and-sister relationships on Fox’s Sunday Night animation block. The antagonism between siblings is obvious, from Bart and Lisa Simpson to Meg and Chris on Family Guy. However, the entire sibling relationship is what carries Bob’s Burgers, as it is the three kids (Tina, Gene, and Louise Belcher) whose loving dynamic provides the beating heart of this popular animated series.

When it comes to these kids, it is Tina and Louise who have the most authentic relationship of the three, but this is also likely because Gene is so much closer to their mom, Linda, than his sisters. However, while Louise is always trying to help Tina discover herself, it is Tina and Gene who share the most realistic relationship when it comes to big sisters and little brothers, where Louise is often more willing to stick to herself.

Tyreese & Sasha

The Walking Dead (2012-2015)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/The-Walking-Dead-Tyreese-And-Sasha-Williams.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Tyreese Williams showed up on The Walking Dead in season 3 with his younger sister, Sasha. When they arrived, Tyreese was very protective of his sister and did what he could to keep her from being hurt, as the zombies and evil survivors threatened them at every turn. However, Sasha was just as resilient without her brother’s protection. She was a firefighter before the apocalypse and remained by her brother’s side after it started, fighting for survival.

Tyreese and Sasha Williams Walking Dead Timeline

Season 3, Episode 8: “Made To Suffer”

Season 5, Episode 9: “What Happened and What’s Going On?”

Season 7, Episode 16: “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life”

The siblings did begin to grow apart over time, with Sasha falling in love with another survivor named Bob, and Tyreese starting to question his place and seek pacifism in the face of danger. Sadly, in season 5, Sasha watched both her boyfriend Bob and her brother Tyreese die, and it pushed her to become a stronger, more self-reliant character until she finally also sacrificed herself. While together, though, Tyreese and Sasha seemed almost unbeatable as they watched each other’s backs.

Billy & Max

Stranger Things (2018-2019)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/max-looking-at-billy-in-his-car-in-stranger-things.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

Max and Billy are the brother and sister duo from Stranger Things, but they never seem on the same page. That all changed when Billy realized he had to be there for Max when her life was on the line, and that is where their sibling relationship shone through. Throughout most of the series, Billy is mean to Max, and Max hates him for how he treats her and almost dismisses her as his little sister.

However, what really makes this brother-and-sister TV combo so important is what happens when Billy dies. Earlier in the series, Max wished Billy was dead, but she never expected her wish to come true the way it did.

Billy spent most of the series as a selfish jerk, but then he sacrificed his life to save Max and Eleven, dying at the Mind Flayer’s hands to save them both and making Max regret ever making that previous wish. If Billy had lived, he may have seen his behavior for as problematic as it was and made efforts to repair his relationship with Max.

Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch

The MCU (2014-2021)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/pietro-and-wanda-maximoff-looking-at-tony-stark-in-avengers-age-of-ultron.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

The relationship between Pietro and Wanda Maximoff was very important in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though the brother and sister duo only really played a role in one movie in the entire franchise. After appearing in a post-credit stinger, the twins finally made their big MCU debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hydra had raised them as weapons after their home was destroyed by technology taken from Stark International, so they thought Iron Man was responsible and became enemies of the Avengers.

However, the twins ended up helping the Avengers when they learned the truth, although it all ended in tragedy when Quicksilver sacrificed his life to save others, and Wanda was left alone with her new family of the Avengers. Sadly, many more tragedies caused by the Civil War and Vision’s death finally broke Wanda. Her “brother” made a return in WandaVision, although it was not really Pietro (and was played by Fox’s Quicksilver in Evan Peters), but his death set her on her road to evil in the end.

26

Richie & Margot

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/richie-margot-tenebaum-siitting-on-a-couch.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    </figure>

The relationship between Richie and Margo was complicated in The Royal Tenenbaums. In the Wes Anderson masterpiece, Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) has three kids that he raised in a strict environment that left all of them facing serious mental health issues as adults. Of the three, it was Margot and Richie who shared the closest relationship, and that almost turned into something more as Richie had an unrequited desire for his sister that he kept repressed as he grew up.

This all led to a very important moment in the movie where Richie finally realized he could never be happy when he learned about Margot’s secret life. Richie strips himself of all his defenses (as symbolized when he shaves his beard and takes off the sunglasses he always wears), and then slits his wrist. However, Richie didn’t die, and his survival made Margot understand his feelings, and the two shared a kiss in a private moment. It was a controversial, problematic sibling relationship, but a memorable one.
