3 key New York Giants injured on Day 9 of training camp

· · 2 min read

The New York Giants were back in full pads at training camp in West Virginia on Friday afternoon. Thus far, over nine practices, the team has avoided any major injuries, a huge achievement for the Giants.

Players have been getting a little banged up, however. On Thursday, it was learned that defensive back Dru Phillips would miss a “bit” of time with a knee sprain. On Friday, starting center John Michael Schmitz walked off the field and did not return to practice.

Pro Bowl outside linebacker Brian Burns and running back Cam Skattebo were also reported to have suffered injuries.

Injuries mounting at #Giants camp. 3 starters.

Schmitz ‘got his bell rung’ #Giants

Burns was the Giants’ only Pro Bowler last year, and Skattebo is coming back from a serious ankle injury that cost him the second half of last season.

Schmitz, who is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, has not quite lived up to the expectations the team set for him when they drafted him in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Minnesota. His backup is veteran Lucas Patrick. Bryan Hudson is listed as the third-string center.

In fact, Schmitz was recently ranked among the NFL’s worst centers this offseason by Pro Football Focus.

One of the Giants’ priorities under their new regime, led by general manager Joe Schoen and head coach John Harbaugh, was to revamp the interior of the offensive line. They whiffed on several big-ticket free agents and then decided to shift first-round pick Francis Mauigoa from tackle to guard.

That doesn’t erase the fact that they attempted to replace Schmitz, or were willing to. There has been no chatter about a contract extension, so he’s playing for his Giants’ future this season.
